greetings from bangkok!
Fri, 13 Sep 2002
i'm going to apologise in advance for the grammar in this email. the keyboard
i am typing on is very strange!
well all is well with us. we've been here since wednesday now and we are
six hours ahead of you. the flight was fine. qantas are better than in ali’s
days as the meals were lovely and the movies were plentiful. got a bit restless
after 5hrs or so though. the first thing that hit us was the heat when we
got off the plane! its so hot here. like an oven, except you don't seem
to burn or tan quickly, it's just muggy and a bit smelly. that sums up bangkok
nicely. its very big and overwhelming and i wouldn't want to stay here too
long. had a bit of jetlag but slept that off after the first night. the
hotel was nice and we found it fine, although the staff kept bothering us
trying to arrange everything for us - trains, hotels etc. you have to use
the word 'NO' a lot and it can be a bit annoying and tiresome.
yesterday we got an express boat up the chao phraya river. it was great
fun and much much more efficient than road taxis as the traffic is terrible
here. we saw two wats (temples) - wat arun (dawn temple) and wat pho with
the reclining buddha. both were very impressive. so far most things seem
very cheap. except for this internet cafe which is a rip-off but i wanted
to email you so i'll make an exception.
tonight we get an overnight train to chiang mai which should be fun. we
had to give phitsanulok a miss as it is supposedly flooded and currently
being evacuated! oh well! |
